SIPA Partners Principal Delivers Human Rights Due Diligence Training for UNDP Myanmar

Romain Caillaud, Principal at SIPA Partners, recently delivered a comprehensive Human Rights Due Diligence (HRDD) training program organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Myanmar. The extensive training curriculum, delivered in partnership with the Myanmar Centre for Responsible Business (MCRB), addressed the critical need for enhanced corporate human rights practices in Myanmar's challenging operating environment.

The six-module training series concluded last month after running from May through November, covering essential aspects of business and human rights implementation in Myanmar's unique context. Following the country's political crisis in early 2021, companies operating in Myanmar have faced heightened human rights risks and increased scrutiny from stakeholders, creating an urgent need for practical guidance on conducting effective due diligence.

Caillaud co-facilitated sessions alongside UNDP Myanmar's Business and Human Rights Specialist Wint Yee Nandar Lwin and MCRB Director Vicky Bowman. The curriculum addressed fundamental business and human rights principles, human rights policy development, heightened due diligence in conflict-affected settings, operational grievance mechanisms, human rights reporting, and global regulatory trends including the European Union's mandatory human rights due diligence proposals.

The training program targeted both Myanmar companies and international firms operating in the country, providing participants with practical tools to navigate the complex landscape of human rights compliance. Sessions included interactive elements such as breakout discussions, case study analyses, and digital dialogue tools to facilitate participant engagement and knowledge sharing.

The training emphasized the importance of heightened due diligence measures in high-risk environments, reflecting international best practices for companies operating in conflict-affected and fragile settings. Participants gained insights into identifying and prioritizing salient human rights risks, developing effective policies and procedures, and establishing robust monitoring and reporting mechanisms.

As businesses worldwide face increasing pressure from policymakers, investors, and consumers to demonstrate responsible practices, SIPA Partners continues to provide expert guidance on navigating complex regulatory landscapes and implementing effective human rights due diligence frameworks across Southeast Asia and Japan.
