SIPA Partners Consultant Speaks at the Pacific Council on U.S.-China Trade Relations

SIPA Partners Consultant Sam Baron recently participated as a featured panelist at the Pacific Council on International Policy's Annual Conference 2025, held on November 12 in Los Angeles. The session, titled "Tariffs, Trade, and the Future of U.S.-China Economic Ties," brought together leading experts to examine the evolving dynamics of protectionism, strategic competition, and economic interdependence between the world's two largest economies.

Baron joined a distinguished panel that included Mario Cordero, Chief Executive Officer of the Port of Long Beach, and Dr. Zongyuan "Zoe" Liu, the Maurice R. Greenberg Senior Fellow for China Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. The discussion was moderated by Philip Yun, Co-President & Co-CEO of Commonwealth Club World Affairs and Asia Pacific Senior Fellow at the Pacific Council. The panel addressed critical questions about supply chain diversification, tariff policy, and California's role as a gateway for U.S.-Asia trade.

Drawing on his experience advising companies navigating the U.S.-China geopolitical landscape, Baron emphasized the unprecedented challenges business leaders face in strategic planning amid rapidly shifting tariff regimes. He highlighted how the unpredictability of trade policy has made long-term supply chain planning extremely difficult, with companies increasingly turning to "geocommercial strategies" that embed geopolitical risk assessment into their core business operations. Baron also addressed ASEAN countries' pragmatic approach to maintaining trade ties with both Washington and Beijing, offering insights that often surprise U.S. policymakers focused on narratives of zero-sum competition.

SIPA Partners is proud to contribute thought leadership on the critical intersection of trade policy, geopolitical risk, and corporate strategy. We commend the Pacific Council on International Policy for convening this timely dialogue on one of the most consequential economic relationships shaping the global economy.
